Whether your horse is for hacking, showing, hunting or competing, physiotherapy can help a vast array of problems and assist you and your horse in maximising performance potential. Physiotherapy is not just limited to treating spinal and pelvic pain or muscle, tendon and ligament injuries, but can also help address movement compensations due to underlying lameness, degenerative joint conditions and saddle related problems.

Common issues & conditions that may be assisted by physiotherapy include:

  • Soft tissue injuries to tendon, ligament and muscle
  • Back pain related/unrelated to lameness
  • Poor/inconsistent performance issues
  • Foot imbalance
  • Wounds and scar tissue
  • Splints, swellings and capped hocks
  • Behavioural issues – bucking, rearing, jumping issues
  • Lameness
  • Rehabilitation
  • Loss of performance
  • Post Surgery
  • Injury prevention – physiotherapy is useful prior to competition to enhance mobility and flexibility and following competition to enhance tissue recovery. Early detection of movement dysfunction, is key to limiting development or worsening of pain and loss of performance.
  • Schooling issues, disunited in canter, hollowing in transitions, lack of bend, inconsistent in the contact, reluctance to engage and use hindlimbs.

Physiotherapy techniques may be incorporated into a rehabilitation programme to reduce pain, improve movement and restore normal function. Physiotherapy can re-educate muscles following disuse or trauma and assist neural regeneration following injuries to nerves. Physiotherapy can also help relieve stiffness, pain and muscle loss often seen in the older animal. It can help with flexibility and improve muscle function, thereby enhancing quality of life in the older horse.
